  1. The furnace is heated by passing current through electric resistive elements.
    • The furnace is heated by passing current through electric resistive elements.

    • A control circuit turns these heating coils on while the thermocouple reading is below the set point.

    • The white walls of the furnace interior are alumina silicate, a ceramic.

    • These walls act as a thermal mass and radiate the thermal energy into the furnace cavity.

    • The ceramic insulates the furnace so that it can maintain the set temperature more efficiently.

    • A thermocouple in the back of the furnace detects the internal furnace temperature.

    • Sufficient time should be allowed so that the sample is heated to the temperature readout given by the thermocouple.
