Introduction

Use the ASTM guide to take measurements on the relevant dimensions of your test specimen.

  1. ASTM Standard D638 outlines the methods for tensile testing of plastics Section 6 of the standard details the geometry of the samples being tested

    • measure each sample to ensure that they fall within the defined dimensions in standard D638

    • Take note of any deviations so that the dimensions can be adjusted in the Instron software

    • Features such as the grips and the machine's displacement rate are specific to testing plastics and therefore also outlined in standard D638

  2. Samples should be flat and free of any damage to the gauge length, which could compromise the test.
