A hardness test is any method for measuring the resistance of the surface of a material to penetration by an indenter of a known geometry. There are many varieties of hardness test depending on the type of material. For example, metals use the Rockwell, Vickers, or Brinell scales. Polymers can use the Shore Durometer scales. And minerals often use the Mohs scale. The reason for all the scales is that the hardness of materials varies greatly, and some materials will plastically deform when indented while others will not.
